How hard could it be?

I'm looking to build 2 very simple, matching cabinets with louvered doors. For the doors, I will buy a pair of prefab pine shutters, 15x63, which I can get for $60 for the pair. No frills, 14" deep, slightly wider and taller than the shutters. The shutters

How hard could it be? I've looked online at these cabinets (they're called chimney cabinets) and many places want upwards of $500-600 each. I have to be able to make them cheaper than that.

And I think you might know some people who have some woodworking experience. In fact, didn't Puck used to work at a cabinetry shop?

I don't think it would be too hard. Kudos for the creativity! Home made things are so neat. They're one of a kind and can be made into whatever size you want them to be.

In my very limited experience with woodworking — and by "experience" I pretty much mean watching other people do it — I've found that it could be as hard as you choose to make it. How picky are you going to be about how finished it looks? Are you going to be okay with butt joints? How about if the doors don't hang exactly right?

I'm not trying to be discouraging. I TOTALLY think you can do this, and buying the shutters is inspired, and I'm pretty confident in saying that Puck would be happy to come over and help. But as Puck has informed me, cabinet-making has very little room for error (I forget the margin, but it's TEENY!), so things might not come out looking perfect.

Carpenters are 1/4", finish carpenters are 1/8", cabinetmakers are 1/16", and furniture makers is 0". That's the mantra but it really depends on where something is going and how interconnected things are. It sounds like you want a pretty normal box cabinet...this is pretty easy. Much more so if I am remembering correctly and Pants has a table saw. Let me know if you want any assistance/advice.
