I remembered something I wanted to do with my life. This may sound weird or dopey, but I want to start speaking to schools about driving safety and wearing seatbelts. I have wanted to do this since my brother died, but I don't know how to get started. I'm not really looking to get paid (although one day maybe it could turn into a nice second paycheck for a couple of speaking engagements here and there), I really just want to speak to kids about wearing seatbelts.

I think it's totally awesome. And, really, you don't just have to talk to kids. I was with my high school friends recently and they were fighting over "reverse shotgun" because I make front-seat passengers wear their seatbelt. And we're like all growed up and stuff. Bizarre.
As far as getting started, I guess maybe google around for people doing similar things and see if you can pick their brains. Maybe one of the teachers in our midst has ideas on how to get into a school or two to build experience. And, any of us would be willing to be test audiences (and give notes, if you're on the of the Theatre folks...).
AN excellent idea! I bet you would be really good at it too. See if you can't find something here:

Otherwise- you could maybe even e-mail one of those contact people (under general info) and they can steer you in the right direction.
Also, I know a Youth Paster for a church- they might be interested. Especially if you would do it for free...I'll ask him about it if you would like.
I would have to spend some time working up a 45-60 min. thing out of the crap that's swirls through my head, but setting a date with all my best friends to bore them for an hour might be an incentive. Then I might be ready to hit the Youth Church circuit. I will hit you up at that time, AKJ. Appreciate the offer! And the website, it's awesome. Exactly what I was looking for.
Syl, that's marvellous. Sign me up for the test audience!
Also in for the test audience. Am I allowed to act like an adolescent? You know, to make it realistic for you.
;)
Jodi,
You amaze me. I think that is the most wonderful idea. I often think of what needs to be done to educate the public about the importance of wearing seatbelts. It is astounding to me that 44,000 people a year die in auto accidents and there isn't a greater outcry for more stringent enforcement of laws, safer vehicles, etc. Anything you can do, if you educate one person, if you save one life, then.....
oh man, how cool is that?
peace and love you lots
