Random Thoughts - VP Debate edition

Um, did anyone else throw up a little bit when Gov. Palin talked about the "expanded definition" of the VP's responsibilities and how she would take advantage of them, like Dick Cheney has?

Palin word count:
Maverick: 6
Main Street: 6
Partisan/Bipartisan: too many to count

When the first comment is, "Well, she didn't embarass herself," I wouldn't feel terribly encouraged.

Pants and I agreed that, while she didn't fall flat, Palin appeared to have 5-7 talking points that she kept coming back to, and we didn't feel she answered a lot of the questions.

Have I mentioned how much it completely pisses me off that here is only the second woman to share the presidential ticket for America and she's dumb as a rock. We finally get another on in there and it's Phyllis Wheatley. She's Jesse Ventura with better taste in suits. She's a novelty as Alaska's governer and they like her because she's "anti-establishment" and she gives them a check every year. Remember the Jesse check? Remember the budget deficit the year after he left office? Ask Alaska in 2 years how they feel about Sarah Palin.

The expanded powers moment? Yeah. Full-body shudder, complete with vocalized "Yeuuuurrrgghhh!"

To be fair, did anyone keep track of how many times Biden said "fundamental"? Puck pointed it out, and shortly thereafter Biden had a gorgeously drawn-out, full of relish "FUNdaMENTal!" and I giggled.

Managed about 5 minutes of the post-debate talking heads. Dear Geraldine Ferraro: Being proud of Palin as a woman for "managing to go toe-to-toe" against Biden is a horrible feminist message. It's like, "Ooh, look! The girl managed to not embarrass herself against a man!" If you want to be impressed with how much improved Palin was, as Palin, from her Couric interviews, then yes. Valid point. But that "I'm so proud of her as a woman" was insulting bullshit.

Also? To everyone who thinks she did well just because she didn't have any Couric-interview deer-in-headlights moments? No. She was still painfully, obviously uninformed, did not answer the questions she was asked, ramped into her rehearsed "zingers" with an uncomfortable, manic energy, and is apparently completely unaware of her own party's platform. She did not do well.

...huh. Guess I had more to say about that than I thought. Probably should have taken it to my own blog. Sorry.

Amen to what Pusher said. :) She wasn't really debating so much as giving a prepared speech. "I'd like to go back to energy", etc. (which is exactly why they wanted the format they got. *eye roll*) I did love Biden's comments about being a single dad. Awesome.
And (though I am biased) I don't think that Biden made any gaffes or went on and on about something - and since he has a tendency to do both, he did pretty well.
We couldn't get over how much Sarah sounded just like Tina Fey :)

You know, I'd just like to know why politicians seem to like to side step questions posed to them in order to pound more on their specific agendas. I don't think that Sarah was the only one who did this either, they both did. Could you PLEASE just answer the questions already? I mean aren't they given time to respond to their opponent's response after their question anyway?

As one coworker pointed out, if you just talk about what you want to, and not answer anything, it isn't actually a debate.

I had no idea of Biden's past, I guess I just lumped him in with old white guy politician. I now like him a LOT more. He has a good story.

Only caught about 5 min of the debate on this end. Was SO not impressed with Palin. Loved watching the counter on the bottom of the opinion of undecided votes in OH on what the candidates were saying and how as soon as Biden mentioned that there wouldn't be tax cuts, the male opinion went down, but the women's stayed high and went higher when he talked about healthcare reform and more money for education. Now there are some real women for you - thinking long term! Also appreciated that everyone's opinion went down when Palin said "drill baby drill", but also sad that everyone's opinions on global warming seemed to stay nuetral or support Palin more. Grr.
